What to Wear?
Lesson-Mrs. McNosh
1. Preplanning
  • Lesson Objective: When shown an image from the story, students will discriminate between clothes and not clothes with 100% accuracy.
  • Materials/Technology:
    • SmartBoard
    • Mrs. McNosh Hangs up Her Wash (book)
2. Lesson Opening
  • The lesson will begin by the timer going off and me calling the students over to take their seats at the carpet after they check their visual schedules.
  • Review topic “Yesterday we learned what clothes are. Today we’re going to read a story about a lady who washes clothes and hangs them up to dry. She gets mixed up and hangs up some things are not clothes! She’s super silly so when I read pay attention to if she is hanging up clothes or not clothes!”
3. Lesson Body
  • MODEL: I will read the story aloud to the students. I will stop after each item that Mrs. McNosh hangs up and point to the image in the book and say, “dresses, clothes” or “dog, not clothes.” I will do this throughout the story and for each item that she hangs up.
  • LEAD: “You all did a wonderful job listening to the story, this time I want you to help me decided if the items are clothes or not clothes that sill Mrs. McNosh hangs up to dry.” I will read the story again and stop at each item Mrs. McNosh hangs up, point to it, label it, and say clothes or not clothes then have the students repeat the label and clothes or not clothes.
  • TEST: “Great working friends! That Mrs. McNosh was very confused about what clothes were and what not clothes were!” I will turn on the SmartBoard and introduce the activity. “Friends, it’s your turn to hang up the wash! Remember we only hang up clothes because we only wash clothes! You will move the picture to clothes line if it’s clothes or move it to the box if it’s not clothes. I will call on you 2 at a time and one friend can pick a picture and tell us what it is and the other friend will move it. Remember if you’re sitting at your seat, give me a thumbs up or a thumbs down if you think your friend is right or not!” I will demonstrate one example. I will call on 2 friends at a time, friend 1 will label the image and friend 2 will move it to the appropriate place (line or box). Students will have multiple opportunities to participate and switch roles. Lots of positive reinforcement will be provided.
  • Differentiation for individual students: Students will have multiple opportunities to discriminate clothes and not clothes items. They will be able to see the image in the book and also a variety of images on the SmartBoard to increase generalization of clothes and not clothes. Students will be able to work together to complete the SmartBoard activity and practice taking turns. Students can verbally express answers if able, if not, they can point to their own clothing on their bodies to identify type of clothing and can hold up a check or an x card to express clothes and not clothes.
5. Lesson Closing and Evaluation:
  • “Wow you did a great job working together to hang up the wash! Super work at circle today friends! Go check your schedules and see what’s next!”
  • I will continue reviewing this skill based on need of student and IEP goals in a one-on-one teaching setting. I will assess this skill by having real materials; clothes and random non clothing items, and ask the student to sort between clothes and not clothes in a one-on-one setting. I will take data on accuracy of responses.
